Our Skills

Technical - Security (Biometrics - False Accept/Reject)

Biometric methods are typically rated on their threshold percentages for "False Acceptance" and "False Rejection". The former term denotes the case when an unauthorized person may gain access to your system or facility; the latter when an authorized user is improperly denied access.

Consider an ATM (banking machine) access system: a "False Acceptance" means you may lose a few dollars, whereas a "False Rejection" means you may lose a valuable customer. What are the probabilities of either event occurring? Can the system be tuned to adjust these?

Consider a nuclear generating system control room access system: a "False Rejection" means that the employee will be inconvenienced by having to sign in manually with the security desk, whereas a "False Acceptance" may allow penetration by a foreign government or terrorist organization, and the risk of a costly accident or the loss of confidential material or even fissionable material.
